Livecasting Bay Mills Community College Fall Feast

Hello everyone!  I will be live casting from Bay Mills Community College.  Each year here at Bay Mills Community College we celebrate the changing of the seasons with a traditional fall feast.  It is a time where students and staff come together, share a meal and give thanks.  There will also be a drum.

Game of Thrones

When my husband suggested that I start watching the show Game of Thrones I was less than thrilled as it just did not look like the usual show that I watch.  I finally relented and now after many late nights watching episode after episode I was hooked and I am now a huge Game of Thrones fan.  Last Sunday was episode 2 of season 4 and we had it recorded and planned to watch it on Monday.  If you are a fan of the show you probably already know what happened and it was pretty huge for the show.  Monday arrived and everywhere I turned were people talking about the show.  The news, facebook, friends and people at work were discussing the show.  I somehow managed to not hear any specific details other than it was a much watch episode.  My husband on the other hand was not so lucky.  He was watching HLN and they were discussing it and the spoiler came across the feed at the bottom!  He was so mad.  I'm sure that he has learned his lesson that you have to avoid all TV and internet until you can watch the show, but what do you do if you absolutely cannot avoid it?  The daily dot has some great tips for people trying to avoid the spoilers while online  http://www.dailydot.com/technology/how-to-avoid-spoilers-online/  Do you have any good tips to share? 

 

Fed Ex Bus Crash

I am sure that if you watch the news at all you saw the story out of California about A Fed Ex truck that smashed into a bus after it crossed a median.  The bus carrying low income/first generation students burst into flames.

First the Fed ex truck swiped a car first before it slammed into the bus.  Ten people five of them high school students, three chaperones and the drivers of both vehicles were killed in the accident.  Another  thirty adults and teenagers also injured and were brought to hospitals.  It is still unclear what caused the driver to loose control of the truck and because of the fire investigators say that they may not ever know the cause. 

 

For me this story hits close to home having teens that have been looking into colleges and have been on trips exactly like these.  It is heartbreaking so many people were injured and died.  My thoughts are with the people involved in the crash, families and friends.  

 

 

First Job Interviews!

Two of my older children had their very first summer job interviews this week and as parents we could not have been more proud.  Both kids are great students Marcus has all A’s and one B and Cat has A’s and B’s.  This was a great opportunity for them to see how important good grades are as their report cards were required with their applications.

We spent the weeks leading up to the interview prepping them with interview etiquette, practice questions and planning the perfect outfits.  We would randomly throw a question at them in the middle of dinner such as tell me about yourself or what kind of previous job experience do you have? We also looked up some great resources online and one of them I think all teens and parents for that matter should check out is http://teensgotcents.com/  it is a great site for teens who want to learn about being smart financially.  They have great articles such as "Prom on a budget" or "How to get a part time job".  The site also has information on college, careers, and so much more.  This site really got us all thinking about the importance of a part time job and what they will do with the money that will be earned. 

Next we looked into planning the perfect outfits for the interview.  They went through their closets and tried on a few things and Marcus found an appropriate shirt but Catalina came up empty handed so we headed off to the local thrift store to see what we could find.  We were lucky and found her whole outfit which consisted of a fuchsia Ralph Lauren sweater and really nice black dress pants both of which looked brand new and I was also able to find a pair of nice black pants for Marcus as well.  As a mom of six I love finding good deals.     

The day of the interview finally arrived and I do not know who was more nervous for them, them or us - actually it was us, definitely us!  We made sure to arrive at human resources ten minutes early to check in which turned out to be perfect.  Catalina had her interview first and then Marcus.  Both kids thought the interviews went great and they said they felt like they were well prepared and able to answer all of the questions posed to them.  Well I am happy to say that they BOTH received calls yesterday offering them the positions!!!

Frozen

We received Disney's Frozen in the mail on Tuesday thanks to Amazon pre-ordering and my son Max has been watching it ever since.  This also happens to be the first movie that we brought him to the movie theatre to watch.  It really is a great movie for the whole family to watch as all of my kids enjoyed it.  The musical soundtrack is really great and it has a pretty good storyline as well.  Definitely worth the buy!       

Display Shelves

I had mentioned the white face out book shelves in my last post so I thought I would share a picture.  I found these new at goodwill a few years ago and they have been great.  You can also accomplish the same effect with rain gutters for pretty cheap.  Just google it and you can find lots of posts detailing how to make them. 

Book shelves!

I don't know about the rest of you but I love looking at pictures of other peoples book shelves.  My book shelves are set up in our dining room and span the entire wall.  It is filled with mostly children's books.  Here is a picture.  You can't see it in this pic but just to the right is a white shelve that allows the books to face out which if you have the space is the ideal way to display books for children.  I use mine to display our themed books such as holidays, seasons or any other theme that they might be covering at school that week.  Right now it is holding spring and Easter themed books.
